Vauban Tower – Pfaffenthal – Luxembourg

The Vauban Tower  is named after the French engineer
Sébastien de Vauban (1633-1707), the most important French fortress builder under Louis XIV.
In 1684 he was placed in technical charge of the siege
of the City of Luxembourg by the French.

  1. Oh yes, the mighty Luxembourg might have been threatening this poor and defenseless little country of France!
Incidentally, Vauban built most of the fortifications in my hometown, Strasbourg.

  2. The tower is amazing and quite old! That's an interesting structure behind the tower – perhaps steps leading to that large wall? The bridge offers a interesting mix of new and old. I learn so much from your photos!! 🙂

  3. It is interesting that Vauban's fortification in Luxembourg was used to defend Luxembourg against his native French!

That bridge in the background could be an entry for Sunday Bridges, hint, hint!

  6. I think you've showed us that bridge in the past. Hard to believe that tower is so old! Great shot from a great angle.

Best wishes, Leia, on your orals today. I'm sure you will do very well!

  7. Yes, Vauban is very well known in France, but I did not know he built towers also in Luxembourg. The contrast with the modern bridge is impressive!

I LOVED the poem you wrote on my benches blog today! did you create it yourself?..it's so beautyful!

  8. Vauban knew how to build towers very well. It's in incredibly good shape for being well over three hundred years old.

  9. I would love to spend an afternoon walking around that area looking for photos. I'll bet there would be plenty of good pickins.

  10. Hello Leia! Of course I liked your photo! Sorry for the rant about why french needed to invade all their neighbors. I was being sarcastic about the french and their need for an empire.
If it pushed people to built buildings like this one, maybe it was a good thing, in a way. Smile, la vie est belle!
