Fort Thüngen and Mudam – Luxembourg

The medieval Fort Thüngen and the contemporaneous
architecture of Mudam – Beauty in harmony!

Fort Thüngen is a historic fortification in Luxembourg City.

Most of the original fortress was demolished after the 1867 Treaty of London,
which demanded the demolition of Luxembourg City’s numerous fortifications.
The three towers and the foundations of the rest of the fort were all that remained.
During the 1990s, the site was reconstructed in its entirety,
in parallel with the development of the site for the construction
of the Mudam, Luxembourg’s museum of modern art.

  1. What a neat museum! It's a shame the others were destroyed.

Don't study too hard! You need a photo break to reinvigorate the brain 🙂

  2. You're so very right…beauty in harmony.
Enjoy your studies, but do try and take some breaks and enjoy some fresh air.

  3. The older buildings are so elegant and stately. Fortunately, the new glass buildings complement them superbly. When the I. M. Pei glass pyramid was built at the Louvre, I was at first very critical. But, over time, I have adapted and now see the beauty in the contrasts. So, seeing your photos today, I skipped the critical (old fogey) attitude and raced quickly to admiration!

  5. First things first: Happy anniversary to a wonderful couple so much in love! Our hope is that your love will continue to blossom and grow through the years as you celebrate many more anniversaries!

When you get to the point where you finish each others' sentences, you know you've got it made!

    The photograph is priceless.

I really like this post juxtaposing the old and new. That old fort is so enticing…maybe some day I'll be able to go through it; and the Mudam is simply magnificent. Beautiful photographs – so well exposed and great colors.

  11. I am quite upset about the Treaty of London demanding the fort be demolished. I am going to have to do some research into the Luxembourg Crisis and the reasons behind the demolition of the fortress.
We're hoping to visit Luxembourg in the spring, and your beautiful photos make me all the more excited about seeing it.
Good luck with your studies, Leia.
    All best wishes,

  13. Nice contrast of old and new. They seem to have tried to capture elements of the turrets in the glass.
