Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau

Baarle-Hertog is a municipality belonging to the
Belgian province of Antwerp, but the biggest part
is located in the Dutch province of North Brabant.

The border is so complicated that there are some houses
that are divided between the two countries .

  1. That is fascinating. Thanks for showing it to us. Borders are something that governments invent. Ordinary people can move happily among their friends and neighbors without thinking about the borders.

  2. Je connaissais les rues séparées par une frontière (les numéros pairs dans un pays et les impairs dans l'autre) mais pas les maisons divisées !

  5. Very interesting! Looks like the place is filled with churches, too. I wonder if there are churches that are divided by the border? You could have Catholics on one side and Protestants on the other.

And can you imagine your immediate neighbors living in a different province?

    Fascinating post!

  6. Now wouldn't that be nice Leia to be a resident of two countries …. or maybe not! I wonder if they pay taxes to both countries.
Lovely pics to feast my eyes on

  7. Fascinating.
Did you ever go to 4 Corners in the US – where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah meet so you can stand in four states at once.
Dear L & C, I'm just catching up with your travels and your new home in Belgium. i know I am in for a treat!

  8. I have to agree with Jack. But I'm sure it makes things difficult for some of the residents and commercial establishments. Imagine having to compute and pay for your taxes in two different countries. One is bad enough.

    Et rigolo aussi!
Mais alors, quand un voleur se sauve et traverse la frontière est-ce que les gendarmes ont le droit de l'arrêter de l'autre côté de la frontière?
